Ways to stretch your dollar at the hair salon

Today, I had the sort of experience girls only dream of...I met my hair-style idol (some may say stalkee), and he gave me a new hair cut!

alyglasses.jpgAdorable pose, no, but totally cute cut! The master of my mane? None other than What Not to Wear's Nick Arrojo (founder, owner, and grand master of Arrojo Studio in New York City). And while, no, a cut with Nick does not qualify as a steal or a deal, it is most absolutely the most acceptable splurge in this stratosphere.

I see a good hair cut as almost as important as, say, dental care or vision screenings. (Actually, more so, in some respects!)

Furthermore, cuts with Nick's apprentices are quite affordable, and the salon often looks for hair models, who get free or deeply discounted services.

Which brings me to an actual reason for this post (beyond self-obsession).

In honor of my sexy new hair cut, I decided to write a little something that would make everyone feel a little more comfortable (and less in debt) at the salon.

So, without further ado, here are some ways to stretch YOUR dollar at the hair salon. (With special thanks to Halo Salon and Color Lab (halocolorlab.com) for some great tips!)

  • Figure out a budget for service and product before your visit to the salon
  • Share your budget with your stylist so they can work with you
  • Ask about a referral program
  • Ask about specials
  • Offer to be a hair model
  • Ask about new talent rates
  • Ask about product refills
  • Ask to be put on the mailing list for upcoming specials or promotions and Check salons website for printable coupons
  • Check to see if the salon has loyalty points to use towards product or service
  • Ask about package or group rates (girls’ night or Mommy’s day out)
  • Many high-end salons offer complimentary neck trims and bang trims in between haircuts
  • Don’t wash your hair everyday. Washing daily will dry out your hair, cause your color to fade sooner and increase your product costs.
  • Buy professional products. Professional products are much more concentrated than store brands. So, you can use much smaller portions for shampooing and styling.
  • Try facial framing highlights or partial highlights rather than a full highlight. This will save money, while still making you look glamorous.
  • Get full color services only every 2nd or 3rd retouch
  • You don’t have to get a hair cut every 6 weeks. Talk to a professional stylist about creating a hair cut that will last longer with a softer “growing out” period.
  • Try a more forgiving hair color (low lights or demi color)
  • Go over products you already have at home so you don’t duplicate
  • Stock-up on product when the salon is having specials or promotions on your favorite products
  • When some one asks for gift ideas for you, request gift certificates to the salon

These are great suggestions, and your hair looks very good. Many are ideas I've never heard of doing before and will keep them in mind for my next salon visit. I went to a salon recently that only cost $30 a cut, plus what I tipped. They had given me hot tea while I waited, the atmosphere in the place was fun, and the girl who cut my hair also gave me a head and neck massage and washed and fixed my hair. It was an awesome experience, and I'm shocked by how little they charged. I was sure to tip her very well, and my hair looks great. We're on a pretty tight budget right now, and a haircut is not a thing my husband and I can afford for me to splurge on.

$30 really was far under what my haircut is worth, and it looks awesome. The girl who cut it took such time and really made sure not to miss anything. I've had nothing but compliments, and some people THINK I got my hair cut somewhere pricey (can't afford that). This is going to be "my salon" in this area, as we moved here a year ago and I've been looking since I arrived for somewhere really awesome. This place definitely is a good place, and I saw other people in and out who received great hair cuts, too. I always think it pays off if you go to a salon to see how other people come out of it, and if they like their hair and it looks good, even if it's not a style you might choose yourself, whether that style is done well on them.

Will be returning to this salon and so glad my search is over for a great place to go!!
