As I am mindful it is my sworn duty to present you, my friends and loyal readers, with the most stupendously awesome of steals and deals, I realized it was about time I started to post about some hot sales going on in our midst!
shoppingbags_130x90.jpg
As I am NYC-based, forgive me if the brick-and-mortar mentions are localized to my region: I'm researching more nationwide happenings and will pass along the info as I get it!

  • Perhaps the penultimate experience in power shopping, the legendary Barneys New York Warehouse Sale will be occurring through Monday September 1. More info available at this link.
  • If you are more of a netizen, Bluefly (hot spot to check out designer duds for less!) is having their semi-annual Blue Sale through August 27.

More coming soon! Have a great weekend!

My first job post-college was at a vanity press that happened to share the floor with a super-trendy handbag giant. I made pretty crappy money, and couldn't begin to afford to do much more than pout as I saw the girls with their bags in the elevator bank. Then, one day, I heard magical news…said company was having a sample sale, and the whole building was invited.

My supervisor was a sad, lonely man who did not understand my impassioned need for a quality pink signature leather hobo. For some ridiculous reason, he found editing proofs to be a better use of my time – and from that moment, my obsession with the world of sample sales began.

resize-alypinkdress.jpgLet's face it: Outlets are great, eBay is a lifesaver…but there's a primal satisfaction to going to the designer source and paying a fraction of what your friends paid retail for just last season. Envy, quality, survival of the fittest, it's all there – in bins torn asunder by girls that are just a little more crazy than you.

Of course, as I was to learn recently, it can all go very, very wrong.

Recently, I was roaming through the city when I realized one of my favorite designers was holding a sample sale that afternoon at a nearby hotel. Her style embodies a lot of my most valued fashion themes (i.e. pink and loud and lots of girlie ribbons), and better yet, her sample sales are famous for being insane. (As in $400 dresses slashed to well under $100.) While I don't necessarily *need* anything, I do have a ton of pretty posh events coming up. Any purchases I made would thus not be a splurge, but an investment in my future, and quite frankly, a reflection on my very image as a semi-up-and-coming fashionista. It could, in effect, change the scope of my entire career.

How sad thus the outcome was to be.

Even in the normally quite post-lunch mid-afternoon hours, the converted-hotel-conference-
room-cum-sample-sale-setting was a packed madhouse of trend-hungry post-teeny-boppers eager to blow their own meager earnings on something gloriously frilly. As there were no dressing rooms, women would crowd in corners shielding themselves with the bodies of friends, ripping off their clothes in order to try on just about anything they could find in (or close to) their size. In such an environment, we can't help but return to our animal kingdom roots, and it's very much an exercise of survival of the fittest.

In such an environment, weaker (meeker?) beings have little chance of survival. Likely, they will be pushed and shoved aside, and should they even find any items in their size, will have it ripped away from them in a fit of shopping frenzy. If they even get that far — these are also the girls that aren't savvy enough to wear appropriate communal changing attire. Such beings can be noted by the choice to, regardless of the fact they are stripping down in front of strangers, wear thongs or see-thru/crotchless panties.

As soon as I had entered the room, I fell in love with a black and pink mesh cocktail dress with a hot pink sash across the bodice ($400 marked down to $35!). Even more exciting, they had one left in my size!

I followed the lead of the nearby masses, pulling my own little black dress over my head, and tossing it aside to try on my soon-to-be-new dress. It didn't zip! I thought back to the dessert I had with lunch, sighed in regret, and tried on the next size. That did not fit either! All around me, I saw other girls slip dresses right on…no sighing, no tears.

My glorious find officially sucked.

There's nothing like absolute failure at the sale of all sales to make you question the very nature of your femininity. And yet, it makes you want to try harder, shop better, eat less chocolate. But yet, I'm already looking forward to my next sale…cause that ultimate holy grail – the price-slashed dress that will make everyone green with hate – just may be waiting. And maybe even fit.

Go forth and sample. Here's a listing of some places to find sample sales online (and off!):
